1) Vehicle sees 20,000 pounds of pulling force

2) Vehicle traveled 3 inches

3) 4X mechanical advantage

Both rope legs on pulleys have the same tension, so Pulley #1 sees 5K on each leg for a 10K total load. That means that the right leg on Pulley #2 sees 10K, and so does the left leg, the anchor then sees 20K. So the total pulling force to the vehicle is the sum of these loads – 10K+5K+5K = 20K. From the conservation of energy : 5K x 12 inches = 20K x 3 inches. In other words, pulling 5K for 1 foot is the same amount of work as pulling 20K 3 inches.

It’s true that most of us will probably never need to rig a vehicle with this “Spanish Burton” method, but its still interesting to know it’s possible to reach a 4X mechanical advantage with only 2 pulleys and a length of rope or cable. The common use of two pulleys typically results in merely a 3X advantage, not 4X.

Check out the attached illustration below from certified off-road trainer Bob Wohlers of Off-Road Safety Academy – Blue Sky Adventures, Inc.  showing an uncommon winch pulley setup using the “Spanish Burton” method.
Note the second independent winch line extension on the upper pulley. This changes things a bit from simply counting how many line legs are returning to the pulling vehicle. Some have stated that the “Spanish Burton” method was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci way back in the 1400’s. Would not surprise us if he did, Leonardo was the master at simple machines and kinematics. Check out some of his early sketches of pulleys – he was the man!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Factor 55 booth at the 2019 running of the King of the Hammers race, and congratulations to all of the racers that participated all week long. Factor 55 was represented on the podium for all 5 race classes, even being on the winning cars on 3 out of the 5 race categories.

Every year we partner with Ultra4 racing and we sponsor the Tech Inspection Tent. We also provide free synthetic winch rope repair/splicing to all racers. This year was no different. We repaired countless winch ropes and got the racers back out on the race course. Nobody abuses vehicle recovery gear more than off-road racers.
