It is very difficult to tell the difference between the fibers at face value. Burning the fibers and looking for how the fibers melt or smell is one way to test them. That is why it is very important to buy from reliable sources to know exactly the type of rope you may be purchasing.
One thing, for the average consumer, nylon, or dynamic ropes are usually much larger where polyethylene ropes are lighter and smaller in diameter like a winch line.
