Thank you to all those who entered our Swag Giveaway!
Congratulations to all who answered this correctly! We are always impressed with the knowledge that many of you off-roaders possess, good job!
1) Vehicle sees 20,000 pounds of pulling force
2) Vehicle traveled 3 inches
3) 4X mechanical advantage
Both rope legs on pulleys have the same tension, so Pulley #1 sees 5K on each leg for a 10K total load. That means that the right leg on Pulley #2 sees 10K, and so does the left leg, the anchor then sees 20K. So the total pulling force to the vehicle is the sum of these loads – 10K+5K+5K = 20K. From the conservation of energy : 5K x 12 inches = 20K x 3 inches. In other words, pulling 5K for 1 foot is the same amount of work as pulling 20K 3 inches.
It’s true that most of us will probably never need to rig a vehicle with this “Spanish Burton” method, but its still interesting to know it’s possible to reach a 4X mechanical advantage with only 2 pulleys and a length of rope or cable. The common use of two pulleys typically results in merely a 3X advantage, not 4X.
Big congrats to our FB Winner, Alan Hamel and IG Winner @sheepythejku

Factor 55 was represented on the podium for all 5 race classes, even being on the winning cars on 3 out of the 5 race categories. Every year we partner with Ultra4 racing and we sponsor the Tech Inspection Tent. We also provide free synthetic winch rope repair/splicing to all racers. This year was no different. We repaired countless winch ropes and got the racers back out on the race course. Nobody abuses vehicle recovery gear more than off-road racers. Factor 55 – Race tested, race proven. Made in USA |

LDP- Available NOW
There are no shortcuts to proper product development. The new Load Distribution Plate product is a good example of this. Although we have lab and field tested this product ourselves, we also rely on trained professionals to test and provide feedback on product performance. How many iterations of product design does it take?
Typically 3 :
ENGINEERING PROTOTYPE – followed by testing, data interpretation, and design improvements.
PREPRODUCTION PROTOTYPE – followed by smaller iterative changes as well as further internal and field testing and data interpretation.
PRODUCTION – followed by QA and test/performance validation.
Test, retest, test again.
Many of us may never need to recover a vehicle with multiple winches with multiple angles and elevations, but trail bosses, the towing industry and the military regularly do. These are the type of load scenarios that the LDP product is designed to safely address. Take a look at the photos from our friend Kyle from Off Road Consulting and Driving Instruction demonstrating a possible loading scenario (Rigging in picture is under low loads for demonstration purposes). Note how the various loads possess enough degrees of freedom to self align without binding the cables or ropes. Yes, you could attempt to collect all of these loads in a single screw pin shackle, but often times it is difficult to fit all of the rigging into a single shackle opening. In addition, it can be difficult to determine the net load on the shackle body. Look for the LDP to be available this week. Products derived from sound engineering disciplines.
So how was your recovery gear developed?

Extreme Duty Soft Shackles | Knot Placement Break Test Video
Thanks for your patience on this. Here is the video of our soft shackle knot position test that many of you asked for. As mentioned before, we take the average breakage data from many sample tests completed. This video is typical of a single sample test. The first test is of our 10 inch soft shackle with the knot positioned in the middle of the span and the second test is with the knot positioned against the rigging, in this case the oversized test bed steel hook.
In the first part of the video you will begin to notice the white plasma fibers being revealed. This is simply the natural UHMWPE fibers that are not coated with the outer protective red coating.
As mentioned before, for these Factor 55 Extreme Duty Soft Shackles, the ultimate breaking strengths of either knot placement was within 2.2% of each other – between 44,000 and 45,000 pounds. We did not observe an ultimate strength advantage to either knot position arrangement.
Yes, we are interested in the ultimate strength data, but we are equally as interested in the repeatability of this data, as well as the behavior and repeatability of the failure mode. In all of the test samples, the ultimate failure mode was the same – the loop around the knot failed- highly repeatable.
So there you have it, highly repeatable ultimate breaking strengths, and highly repeatable failure modes. The exact qualities you want to see in your vehicle recovery gear.

Does it matter how you use a Soft Shackle?
Alright Factor 55 Nation, the moment you’ve been waiting for. Remember, this particular Factor 55 test was only to determine ultimate breaking strength differences and not whether during cycles of tension and slack, one configuration is a more secure attachment than the other. All tests were conducted without any possible sharp edges affecting the tests. D/d of 4-6.
INTERNET MYTH – The breaking point of a common soft shackle is highest when the knot is up against the rigging.
Is it? Well the answer is NO. Take a look at the test sheets and the pile of destroyed test samples. Here is a look at the empirical evidence:
Knot in the middle average breaking strength : 45,370 pounds
Knot against the rigging average breaking strength : 44,400 pounds
Yes, the knot in the middle of the span test samples broke consistently above the knot up against the rigging by about 2.2% but as we mentioned earlier, anything below 5% we consider to be within the experimental error of the test. So for those of you who answered “the same”, good job and congratulations you are correct.
Again, be careful, the internet is full of strong opinions and false statements of authority, especially from self-proclaimed experts. Be careful what you believe to be true. Always ask to see the data to back it up.

NEW PRODUCT- Extreme Duty Soft Shackle 10″ and 20″ Available Nov 23rd!
The Factor 55 10 inch and 20 inch diameter Extreme Duty Soft Shackles are made in the USA under the uncompromised Factor 55 quality standards. Like all Factor 55 rigging products, these shackles have been lab and field tested to assure consistent minimum breaking strength values. Each Extreme Duty Soft Shackle is constructed of HMPE Plasma rope that includes additional abrasion and UV protection with a woven polyester jacket that is carefully whipped and coated with Fiber Lock. Note how the protective jacket is attached close to the knot, providing as much abrasion protection as possible. For their size and weight, these Extreme Duty Soft Shackles provide an additional 25-30% verified breaking strengths when compared to common standard soft shackles on the market today.
The longer 20 inch diameter version functions as a common soft shackle but also allows for the user to double loop the shackle resulting in breaking strengths exceeding 70,000 pounds. WLL and minimum breaking strengths clearly marked.
*NOTE- Although the test data for the doubled 20 inch soft shackle samples consistently broke above 83,000 pounds, we believe that using a conservative breaking strength of 70,000 pounds is more appropriate.
Engineered, Tested, and Made In The USA
Minimum Breaking Strength – 43,500 pounds
WLL – 8,700 Pounds
3/8 diameter plasma rope construction
Weight – 10 inch – 6.5 ounces
Weight – 20 inch – 10.5 ounces
